Jesuit Superior announces ten year Universal Apostolic Preferences

New strategic goals for the Jesuits worldwide! Earlier this week, the Jesuits Superior General, Fr General Arturo Sosa SJ announced four Universal Apostolic Preferences (UAPs) for the Society of Jesus worldwide for the years 2019-2029.

Announcing the [references in a letter addressed to the Whole Society, all Jesuits and collaborators. In missions, Fr Arturo Sosa SJ said the  UAPs are a ‘fruit of an election’, they are a result of a process whose desire was to ‘find the best way to collaborate in the Lord's mission, the best way to serve the Church.’

 In his letter, Fr Sosa SJ said the preferences are as follows:

(i) To show the way to God through the Spiritual Exercises and discernment;

(ii) To walk with the poor, the outcasts of the world, those whose dignity has been violated, in a mission of reconciliation and justice;

(iii) To accompany young people in the creation of a hope-filled future;

(iv) To collaborate in the care of our Common Home.

The Holy Father, Pope Francis, who was presented with the preferences said the four, are a result of ‘real discernment’ and are in line with the Universal Church’s priorities.

“He (Pope Francis) affirmed that the proposed preferences “are in agreement with the current priorities of the Church as expressed through the ordinary magisterium of the Pope, the Synods, and the Episcopal Conferences, especially since Evangelii gaudium,” read Fr Sosa’s letter.

An “Apostolic Preference” is a “priority for discernment”, in which we recognise the calls made to us by the Holy Spirit as we read the signs of the times.

The UAPs will therefore guide the Jesuits, collaborators and partners to formulate their programming and activities in their mission to promote justice and reconciliation.
