Our Lady of the Wayside Parish, Mount Pleasant opens a medical room.

Our Lady of The Wayside Parish in Mt Pleasant recently a parish medical room which was officially opened by His Grace Archbishop Robert Christopher Ndlovu on the 10th of February 2019.  

This milestone was born out of the need to harness the skills and service of parishioners in the health sector among others and the need to provide first aid assistance to medical emergencies that occur at the church.

The rising needs in the community to offer medical assistance could not be forgotten and this development is key among other service projects the parish has embarked on recently. 

A medical team, comprising of 9 doctors and several professionals in including General Practitioners, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, laboratory scientists and psychiatrist will service this facility. 

Other professionals involved in this team include Urologists, Eye specialists, Ear, Nose and Throat surgeons, Cardiothoracic surgeon, Anaesthetists, Public Health Specialists, Family Medicine specialists, Radio-Oncologist, Paediatricians, counsellors among others. 

The facility is in the process of being registered with the Health Professions Authority of Zimbabwe and at the moment will only be opening during Sunday masses to attend to any emergencies that may arise.

 The team has surpassed its recent milestones in its quest to reach out to communities and give back to the Lord through service. 

The doctors, have committed to the mission of the Church, to heal, and recently they started their first outreach programme to one of the parish’s mass centres Christon Bank located in the Mazowe areas which was offered services to community members, Catholic and non-Catholic. 

For Drugs and equipment, the doctors currently rely on donations from members of the association. 

A request has been extended to other parishioners to support with required materials to support this cause. 

Dr Berejena one of the medical doctors mentioned that ‘We aim to foster healing, and promote wellness for all persons and communities, with special attention to our neighbours who are poor, under-served, and most vulnerable.  We understand that every human being a unity of body, mind, and spirit.’  

The medical team of the parish hopes to achieve the following as part of their long term goals:

•Hold clinics for the underprivileged at our medical room.

•Wellness Day activities

•Outreach visits to be extended to Catholic clinics/hospitals. 

•To provide advice on health related issues if called upon. 

The enthusiastic and committed team also aims at establishing linkages with other Catholic health associations in the country, regionally and internationally.
