25 year anniversaries of

Fr Gilbert Mardai SJ

Fr Anesu Manyere SJ

Fr Matsepane Morare SJ

The 31stof July saw a gathering of an array of Jesuits gathered at Arrupe Jesuit University (AJU) in Harare, Zimbabwe, for the feast of St Ignatius, founder of the Society of Jesus and a saint of the Church. Fr Provincial,  Chiedza Chimhanda SJ was the main celebrant and Fr Matsepane Morare SJ preached.

In what is now typical Zimbabwean fashion, the lights were not working as there was no electrical power. That did not stop nor dampen the spirit of celebration. The singing at mass was led by the scholastics who sang beautifully and made the Mass very vibrant. The homilist also seemed to be very fired up.

Two of the Jubilarians started as novices together in Lusaka, Zambia, and the third as a novice in Arusha, Tanzania, in 1994. They were then part of the 1996 group who started as students of philosophy at Arrupe College in 1996 as the third intake of the then new college.

The Rector of AJU, Fr Francis Munyoro SJ, congratulated the three Jubilarians. He pointed out that the three Jesuits have also had many people who have been part of their formation over the years, especially at Arrupe College in the late 1990’s. He thanked those who have worked to form of the men that were being celebrated.

The truth of what was said cannot be underestimated. There is not a Jesuit who becomes one without the work, support, prayers, effort, patience, talents, gifts, resources, and so much more from many other Jesuits who often will never be thanked for the work they have done to form and shape the men who at some point in life celebrate many jubilees over the years, reaping the fruits of the labours of many other Jesuits. Thus, the celebration was not just thanksgiving to God for keeping and blessing the jubilarians, again not only to celebrate the men’s own persistence and commitment to their vocation, but also a celebration of the generosity of all the Jesuits who have contributed to the development and wellbeing of the jubilarians. We continue to pray for blessings for all and pray for more vocations to this least Society of ours.
